In May 1991 a meeting was held at Bright Day Centre
to give those interested an opportunity to hear the President
of Victorian University of The Third Age - U.3.A. - Speak on the
aims and philosophy of U.3.A., the Third Age being the retirement
age.
A small U.3.A. was subsequently formed in Bright, the first
subject being Local History, in particular the gold rush era.
U.3.A. works by bringing together retired people who wish to
continue study in an informal way and similar people with experience
in various subjects, who become voluntary tutors. Members are
often tutors in one group and students in another.
Obviously a fairly large nucleus of people is needed for this
system to work, and as time passed it became clear that there
were not enough people available in Bright to do this. However
a small group wished to continue meeting and it was decided to
just discuss various subjects without benefit of a tutor. So Bright
Discussion Group came into being.
The convenor is Avril Benson, there is no committee, and no
fees. Currently there are 22 members, although this fluctuates
as members join and others move away.
Subjects are wide-ranging covering anything from "Migration,
a Personal View", Euthanasia, "What is happening to our A.B.C.?",
"Loneliness", "Family Relationships", Comic Play-reading and many
more. In fact, whatever people want to talk about. The group has
at times lobbied government on issues important to the community,
this, however is not it's prime function.
The group has an exchange visit, once a year, with a similar
group in Wahgunyah, the two groups having met through A.B.C. Radio.
